DISCOVER THE MOTHS OF SHERFORD COUNTRY PARK
Ever wondered what flutters through Sherford Country Park after dark? Friends of Sherford Country Park (FOSCP), with support from the Devon Moth Group, are inviting the community to a moth trapping and reveal event on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 August.
On Friday evening, two Devon Moth Group volunteers will arrive at 7.30pm to set up moth traps (location: what3words: ///compress.driver.graph). They'll stay overnight in their camper van to monitor the traps, and anyone is welcome to come along and watch, or lend a hand.
The real fun begins on Saturday morning, when the community is invited to join an identification session from 9.30am to 11am. It's a rare chance to get up close with Sherford's nocturnal wildlife, with the chance to see what was caught overnight, learn how to identify different species, and find out why moths matter to our local ecosystem — before watching them being safely released back into the park. It's a great morning out for curious minds of all ages.
FOSCP are looking for volunteers to help facilitate the community identification session on Saturday, and may also need a hand setting up on Friday, depending on the weather. If you're able to help, please get in touch with FOSCP.
Finds from the event will be added to the ongoing Sherford and Sherford Country Park Project on iNaturalist, and a blog post with highlights, insights and photos from the day will follow.
