ROAD CLOSURE APPLICATION – UPDATE
The Sherford Consortium has taken the decision to postpone its application for a stopping-up order to close a short section of highway known as ‘Road Past Vealeholme’, which connects Hercules Road/Main Street in Sherford to Plympton Hill.
Following careful consideration of the feedback received, and given that a road realignment is not required at this stage of the development, the Consortium will pursue alternative approaches to address the two objectives that underpinned the original application.
Firstly, the original plans sought to address concerns about travel between Sherford and Plympton St Maurice. The proposed road closure was a solution developed with the Local Authorities to help manage traffic on the local road network.
Under its planning obligations, the Sherford Consortium is required to make a financial contribution to the Local Authority to deliver a traffic management solution. We will now fulfil this obligation in accordance with the Section 106 Agreement, enabling Plymouth City Council to determine and implement the most appropriate measures to manage traffic and meet the needs of the local community.
Secondly, the closure was intended to facilitate essential infrastructure works, including the diversion of a gas pipeline and overhead electricity cables required to support future phases of development at Sherford. These works involve installing infrastructure across this section of road.
To allow these works to proceed safely and efficiently, we will instead apply for a temporary road closure nearer the time. This work is expected to start in 2027, and we will seek to minimise disruption by coordinating the timing with other planned roadworks in the area where possible.
The Consortium remains committed to delivering Sherford in a way that balances the needs of new and existing communities. We will continue to engage constructively with the Local Authorities and local stakeholders as these next steps progress.
