SHERFORD ROAD TRAFFIC CALMING WORKS TO BEGIN IN APRIL
Work on the Sherford Road Traffic Calming project will begin on Monday 13 April 2026, with the project expected to take approximately 14 weeks to complete.
The works are a planning requirement for Sherford, designed to make Sherford Road safer for everyone who uses it — whether travelling by car, on foot or by bike.
Improvements include widening of the Gemini Road junction, changes to road layout and signage at the bend approaching the new town, a permanent illuminated pedestrian and cycle path connecting Gemini Road to the existing Sherford Road pavement, and a new mini roundabout at the junction of Nettlehayes and Hartwell Avenue.
What to expect
The project will be carried out in three phases.
- Phase 1 begins on 13 April and is expected to last around five weeks.
- Phase 2 follows from 18 May for approximately five weeks, during which the temporary footpath from Gemini Road will be closed, with a clearly marked pedestrian diversion in place along Sherford Road.
- Phase 3 runs from approximately 22 June for a further three to four weeks, with works managed under traffic light control.
The section of Sherford Road between Gemini Road and Candish Drive will be closed to through traffic for around 10 weeks, though access for residents living in that section will be maintained at all times. The signed diversion route is: Gemini Road – Orion Drive – Aquila Drive – Titan Avenue – Hercules Road – Haye Road – Elburton Road.
The Country Park car park and entrance will remain open throughout, and there will be no disruption to power or other services. Working hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Please note that Sherford Road will be reopened to the public for the Plymouth Half Marathon on Sunday 17 May 2026.
A resident letter with full details of all three phases, the diversion route, and emergency contact information has been distributed to homes in the affected area. Maps showing the road closures and diversions are available to download on the Planning page here.
