AUTUMN ACTIVITIES IN SHERFORD COUNTRY PARK
Two exciting community events are taking place in Sherford Country Park this autumn, offering residents the chance to connect with nature and learn traditional rural skills.
Both events are part of Sherford's ongoing commitment to connecting residents with the land's rich heritage and promoting environmental stewardship for all ages.
Family Fun: Orchards and Wildflowers
Wednesday 29th October, 10am – 12 midday
Families are invited to join the Friends of Sherford Country Park for a morning of hands-on activities in the orchard over half term.
The session will include working in the orchard, a scavenger hunt, making simple bird feeders, and sowing wildflowers - it's a great opportunity to keep children of all ages entertained and engaged over the holidays.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear old, warm clothes, gloves, and wellies, and bring a drink.
Meet at the Gemini Road and Orion Drive entrance to the Country Park.
The organisers are looking for volunteers to help support this event, as a good turnout is expected. If you can lend a hand, please get in touch, email: foscp25@gmail.com
Heritage Crafts Workshop: Hedgelaying
Saturday 22nd November, 10am – 4pm
As part of the Heritage Skills Training Programme funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, residents have the opportunity to learn the ancient skill of hedgelaying. This full-day workshop will be led by James Dyson, an expert in rural crafts who has been working with the Friends of Sherford Country Park to introduce traditional conservation techniques to the community.
Hedgelaying is a historic craft that creates natural boundaries, providing important wildlife corridors and habitats. The skills learned date back centuries and remain vital for conservation today. The Heritage Skills Training Programme has already introduced volunteers to traditional crafts including coppicing and hedgelaying, with trained residents set to demonstrate their newly acquired skills at future community events.
The workshop is free to attend but booking is essential. To reserve your place, email: foscp25@gmail.com
