COMMUNITY HERITAGE EVENING COMING SOON
Join Sherford Community Trust for an evening celebrating Sherford's heritage at a free event this December. Curious about Sherford's distant past, the role heritage plays in communities, and how to bring Sherford's history into its present and future - this event promises to offer some fascinating insights and plenty of inspiration.
The Community Heritage Evening is taking place on Wednesday 4th December, 6-8pm, in the hall at Sherford Vale Primary School (PL9 8FA).
Come together with fellow community members to hear speakers from the Box, Sherford's archaeologist, and South Hams District Council's Urban Designer. The three guests will be sharing their experiences and answering questions from the audience.
Meet the speakers below and find out more about what they will be covering during the evening.
Rob Bourn
Over the last 10+ years there has been a large on-going programme of archaeological work on the site of Sherford on the east side of Plymouth. This programme of work has revealed an enormous range of archaeological remains reaching deep into prehistory. These have included internationally important Ice Age animal remains, hints of Mesolithic and Neolithic remains, a Bronze Age barrow cemetery, later Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement remains, a previously unsuspected Roman road and a medieval/post-medieval settlement. This talk will provide an overview of what has been found to date, including from the current on-going archaeological works in the eastern side of the new town area.
Rob is the Managing Director of Orion Heritage. He has been archaeological consultant for the developers of the new town since 2018 and has been working with the previous and current archaeological companies undertaking the fieldwork, Devon County Council, The Box, Hams District Council and Historic England agreeing and implementing the archaeological programme of work ahead of the construction of the new town.
Rob will be talking about the archaeology of Sherford.
Tony Davey
Tony has been working for the Arts and Heritage service for the past 15 years, with the last four being at the newly opened The Box. Drawing upon his previous experience as a social worker and a degree in architecture, his role as Engagement Officer means that he is able to bring together his passion for people and Plymouth on a range of interesting projects, working with the community and exploring the culture of the city and beyond.
Tony will be talking about the importance of place and belonging, highlighting how communities and people are the things that make heritage interesting.
Mark Harris
Mark is an Urban Designer and a Chartered Landscape Architect with over 27 years of experience of working on built environment projects, the most significant of which is the design of the new community/town at Sherford. He is particularly interested in design quality for people, especially streets and public spaces.
Mark will be talking about the options for naming some of the park spaces and areas within and around Sherford based on historic context.
